What is Loft Ventilation?

Loft ventilation is the principle of allowing fresh air to circulate through your roof space to counter a number of problems caused by modern insulation methods.

As we increase the amount of loft insulation to retain more heat in the dwelling area, we reduce the temperature of the roof space whilst at the same time restricting the flow of natural ventilation from the eaves.

In addition, the increased use of washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers and showers increases the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere. As the use of double-glazing increases, and the use of natural chimneys decreases, many of us live in a more humid environment.

This increased humidity gradually makes its way into the roof space by natural convection through loft hatches, electric cable and central heating pipe ways or cracks in the ceiling. The result is a cold roof space with high degrees of water vapour present.

What are the benefits?

A cold humid roof space can give rise to significant amounts of condensation. So much so that in many cases, it is assumed that a leaking roof has caused the problem.

Condensation can saturate roof timbers, give rise to mould and fungus growth, and in extreme cases soak into loft insulation reducing its effectiveness and causing water stains on the underside of the ceiling.

Fresh air ventilation supplied by the Easyvent system will allow your loft to breathe, stabilising the atmosphere and providing an exit route for moisture bearing air.

Easyvent removes the potential for condensation build-up, and protects your timbers,felt and loft insulation from moisture attack.

How is Easyvent Installed?

Easyvent is installed in three easy steps.

Easyvent requires no tools, no expensive scaffolding and no expensive specialist tiles.

Step 1: Calculate how many Easyvents are needed, working on a calculation of one Easyvent for every five square metres of ceiling area.

Step 2: Decide where you will gain maximum cross ventilation. Mark the chosen areas with chalk and separate the overlaying felt by simply inserting your fingers. Note: Always wear protective clothing including gloves and breathing mask or respirator when carrying out this operation.

Step 3: Remove each Easyvent from its packaging and insert the compression spring into the location slot to open up the vent.

Holding Easyvent in both hands, compress the vent and insert between the overlap of the felt and simply release. The spring will expand the vent, securing it in place allowing fresh air to flow through.
